Steiff is the world's best-known manufacturer of high-quality Teddy bears and plush animals for the toy and gift sectors, as well as for collectors. The Steiff 'button in ear' tag is a symbol of quality and the unique characteristic of a genuine Steiff product. The famous Steiff trademark appeared in 1904 as the company tried to distinguish themselves from other manufacturers. By the early 1900s, the Steiff Toy Company was manufacturing teddy bears and other high-quality fabric toys. 1997 marked the 150th anniversary of Margaret Steiff's birth, and although she died in 1909 the company has continued, and is today probably the world's leading and most well known soft toy manufacturer. All Steiff animals are identified by a circular paper chest tag on beige or other neutral-color string, stating the animal's name. A true Steiff stuffed toy has in the left ear a silver-colored metal button with raised script that reads "Steiff."
